A nice place to visit, but....
OK, I've decided that Texas is possibly the armpit of the nation.
We just spent a day and a half in San Antonio, went on the riverwalk, saw the Alamo, and had a couple of Mexican meals. And now, we're done. There's nothing else here. It is hot, muggy, and boring. The Riverwalk and the Alamo are both the two major attractions of the entire state of Texas, and it took us a day to do both.
Because of the much more reasonable real estate costs, Gene and I discussed possibly relocating to San Antonio in the future, like when we retire or within the next 10 years or so, more or less. It was an option as you can get a really nice place to live there for about $200K, like a 3,000 Square foot house on a couple of acres of property. Believe me, it was tempting. But after visiting, uh, I changed my mind.
I now understand why every man, woman, and child in Texas is overweight: the only exciting thing to do is eat really fatty, delicious food. Preferably Mexican. Preferably in San Antonio, which has a Mexican culture so strong it becomes nauseating. Yeah, it's cool to go down and hear the mariachi's play, enjoy the dancing, the food, the shopping. But EVERY DAY? Hey, I have nothing against Mexican culture. It's really fun. But if it's the only interesting thing to do in the city, it'll lose it's charm in a hurry. Even *I* can get sick of Mexican food. It takes a while, but I can.
We went out with a couple who could not gush enough about how great San Antonio is and how great the real estate opportunity is and how wonderful the culture, the history, and the "feel" of the area is. How nice the people are, how family oriented, how WONDERFUL. Ugh. It was hard enough to hear them over the continuous mariachi band blasting in my ear (the table next to us had about 20 requests), but, enough already, I get the idea!
I dunno. All I know is, I will not live in Texas. I don't care if it means living in a 800 square foot condo in California instead of a "spread" in the Lone Star State. My personal opinion. And Gene's too.
